Description
This classic Steakhouse Creamed Spinach recipe delivers a rich and velvety side dish made with fresh spinach sautéed in butter and garlic, then thickened with a creamy cornstarch slurry. Perfectly seasoned and creamy, it pairs beautifully with steak or any hearty main course.
Ingredients
Spinach and Seasoning
- 24 ounces fresh spinach
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- Pinch of black pepper
Cream Sauce
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic in water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ⅓ cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Melt Butter and Cook Garlic: In a large skillet with a lid, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add and Wilt Spinach: Reduce the heat to low, add 24 ounces of fresh spinach to the skillet, cover with the lid, and cook for 5 minutes to allow the spinach to wilt thoroughly.
- Prepare Cream Slurry: While the spinach wilts, mix together ⅓ cup heavy cream and 1 tablespoon cornstarch in a small bowl until smooth to create a slurry.
- Combine Cream Mixture with Spinach: Once the spinach is wilted, remove the lid and pour the cream and cornstarch mixture into the skillet. Stir well to combine.
- Season and Simmer: Season the creamed spinach with ½ teaspoon kosher salt and a pinch of black pepper. Stir to incorporate all ingredients evenly.
- Let Sit and Thicken: Remove the skillet from heat and let the creamed spinach sit, covered, for 3-5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and flavors to meld.
- Serve: Serve the steakhouse creamed spinach warm immediately as a delicious side dish.
Notes
- Using fresh spinach provides the best flavor and texture; however, frozen spinach can be substituted if drained thoroughly.
- For a thicker cream sauce, add a little more cornstarch to the slurry.
- This dish pairs excellently with grilled or pan-seared steaks and other red meats.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste after the cream has been added, as seasoning can vary with ingredients.
