Perfect as a snack, side dish, or topping, this easy stovetop applesauce melds flavors beautifully and can be adjusted for sweetness to your taste.
Ingredients
Fruit
- 3 lb. apples (peeled or unpeeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch slices)
- 2 cups cubed pumpkin or 1 cup pumpkin puree
Liquids
- 1 cup water or apple cider
Spices and Sweeteners
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 2-4 tbsp sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: Place the sliced apples, cubed pumpkin or pumpkin puree, water or apple cider, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice in a large pot or saucepan set over medium heat. Add sugar if you prefer a sweeter applesauce.
- Cook until Tender: Cover the pot and let the mixture cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples and pumpkin are tender and cooked through.
- Puree the Mixture: Using a potato masher, immersion blender, blender, or food processor, puree the cooked ingredients to your desired texture, leaving the applesauce slightly chunky if preferred.
- Cool and Store: Allow the pumpkin applesauce to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Notes
- Using peeled or unpeeled apples will affect the texture and nutrition; unpeeled apples add more fiber.
- Sugar is optional – the natural sweetness of the apples and pumpkin may be sufficient depending on their ripeness.
- Use apple cider instead of water for a more intense apple flavor.
- This applesauce can be served warm or chilled.
- For longer storage, freeze the applesauce in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.
