Description
A refreshing and creamy iced matcha latte made with finely whisked ceremonial or culinary grade matcha, simple syrup, and your choice of milk. This easy 5-minute recipe combines the rich, earthy flavor of matcha with the sweetness of a homemade simple syrup, served over ice for a perfect cool beverage.
Ingredients
For the Simple Syrup
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup water
For the Iced Matcha Latte
- 1 cup ice cubes
- ¾ cup milk (or substitute oat milk or almond milk)
- 1 Tbsp Homemade Simple Syrup (plus more to taste)
- 1½ tsp matcha powder (ceremonial or culinary grade)
- 2 Tbsp hot water (175ºF / 80ºC)
Instructions
- Gather Ingredients: Collect all ingredients needed for both the simple syrup and the iced matcha latte to ensure a smooth preparation.
- Make the Simple Syrup: In a saucepan, combine ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water. Heat over medium heat, whisking continuously until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate; the syrup will keep for up to one month.
- Prepare the Glass: Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice cubes and pour in ¾ cup of milk or your preferred milk substitute.
- Add Sweetener: Stir in 1 tablespoon of the homemade simple syrup or any other sweetener of your choice. You can adjust sweetness later if needed.
- Whisk the Matcha: Place 1½ teaspoons of matcha powder into a bowl with a pouring spout. Add 2 tablespoons of hot water heated to 175ºF (80ºC). Optionally sift the matcha powder beforehand to remove lumps. Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a flat whisk to briskly whisk back and forth forming a 'W' shape until the mixture is smooth and slightly foamy, about 20 seconds. Add a little more hot water if needed to achieve a pourable consistency.
- Combine: Pour the whisked matcha mixture into the glass containing the ice and milk. This concentrated matcha blend will maintain its rich flavor thanks to limited water dilution.
- Serve: Stir gently to combine all ingredients and enjoy your refreshing iced matcha latte immediately.
Notes
- Using hot water (175ºF/80ºC) is essential to fully dissolve the matcha powder and enhance its flavor.
- Sifting matcha powder before whisking helps prevent clumps for a smoother latte.
- Simple syrup can be made in advance and stored refrigerated for up to one month.
- Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup according to your preference.
- You can substitute dairy milk with oat milk or almond milk for a vegan-friendly version.
- Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) for authentic matcha preparation, but a flat whisk works as a good alternative.
