Description
This Garlic Mashed Potatoes recipe features creamy, flavorful mashed potatoes enhanced with minced garlic, garlic powder, butter, sour cream, and whole milk. Perfectly tender potatoes are cooked either on the stovetop or in an Instant Pot, then mashed to a fluffy texture with a few lumps remaining, creating a comforting and delicious side dish suitable for any meal.
Ingredients
Potatoes
- 3 pounds red potatoes (peeled if desired)
Mashed Potato Mix
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces sour cream
- ½ cup whole milk
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder (to taste)
- 1-2 teaspoons salt (to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper (or 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper)
Instructions
- Cook the Potatoes: Choose your cooking method—stovetop or Instant Pot. For stovetop, cut potatoes into quarters, cover with water in a large pot, bring to boil, then simmer for 10-12 minutes until tender. For Instant Pot, place potatoes on a metal rack inside the pot with 1 cup water, pressure cook for 8 minutes, then quick release the pressure.
- Drain and Transfer: Once potatoes are cooked, drain the water thoroughly and transfer the hot potatoes to a large mixing bowl.
- Add Flavorings: To the hot potatoes, add butter, whole milk, sour cream, minced garlic, garlic powder, salt, and cracked black pepper.
- Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mix the potatoes just until all ingredients are combined, leaving some lumps for texture. Avoid over-mixing to keep the potatoes from becoming gluey.
- Adjust Seasonings and Serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and add additional salt or pepper as needed. Serve immediately and enjoy this creamy, garlicky side dish.
Notes
- Peeling the red potatoes is optional; leaving the skin on adds texture and nutrients.
- Using a hand mixer is recommended for the creamiest texture, but a potato masher works well too.
- Adjust garlic powder and salt according to your taste preferences.
- Serve immediately for the best texture; mashed potatoes tend to firm up as they cool.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated with a splash of milk to restore creaminess.
