Ingredients
Matcha Cream Cheese Mixture
- 1 8-oz block cream cheese (room temperature)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp matcha powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
Chocolate Brownie Batter
- ¾ cup Dutch processed, unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¾ cup unsalted butter (melted and slightly cooled)
- ½ cup espresso or strong coffee (lukewarm)
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 1⅓ cup all purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan, then line it with parchment paper leaving a slight overhang on each side for easy removal. Set aside.
- Make Matcha Cream Cheese Mixture: In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and ½ cup granulated sugar until smooth and creamy. Add matcha powder starting with 1 teaspoon, then increase according to taste, and beat until thoroughly incorporated. Add 1 large egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract, beating until combined. Set this mixture aside.
- Prepare Chocolate Brownie Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together cocoa powder and baking soda until evenly mixed. Add melted butter and whisk until smooth. Slowly add espresso or strong coffee and whisk until the batter becomes creamy and thick.
- Add Remaining Ingredients: Add 1½ cups granulated sugar, ½ cup packed brown sugar, 2 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tsp salt, and 2 large eggs. Whisk until fully incorporated.
- Incorporate Flour: Gently fold in 1⅓ cups all-purpose flour until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Assemble the Brownies: Pour the chocolate brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Dollop the matcha cream cheese mixture on top and spread it gently over the surface.
- Create Swirls: Run a knife through the batter to create beautiful swirls that blend the matcha cream cheese throughout the chocolate batter.
- Tap and Settle: Gently tap the pan on the counter a few times to help the batter settle evenly.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes or until the edges start to brown and the center appears slightly jiggly. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with minimal moist crumbs.
- Cool and Chill: Remove from oven and let cool at room temperature. Then chill in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours or overnight until the brownies are fully set. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of matcha powder to suit your taste preference; start with a teaspoon and increase for a stronger flavor.
- The espresso or strong coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without making the brownies taste like coffee.
- Do not overmix the flour to maintain a fudgy texture.
- Ensure cream cheese and eggs are at room temperature for smooth mixing.
- Use parchment paper for easier removal and cleaner edges.
