Description
This Fried Egg Sandwich is a quick and delicious breakfast option featuring layers of white and yellow American cheese, thinly sliced deli ham, and a perfectly cooked over-easy egg, all sandwiched between two slices of buttery toasted bread. The sandwich is cooked in a skillet until the bread is golden and the cheese melts to create a warm, gooey, and savory treat.
Ingredients
Sandwich Ingredients
- 2 slices white bread
- 1 slice white American cheese
- 1 slice yellow American cheese
- 2 slices thinly sliced deli ham (honey ham recommended)
- 1 large egg
- kosher salt, to taste
- fresh ground black pepper, to taste
Cooking Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
Instructions
- Assemble the Base: Place one slice of white American cheese on one slice of the white bread and the yellow American cheese on the other slice. Top each cheese layer with a thin slice of honey ham, preparing your sandwich so it's ready when the eggs are cooked.
- Cook the Egg: Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat and cook one egg per sandwich over easy. Season the egg with a pinch of kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Carefully remove the eggs from the pan before the yolk overcooks and gently place one egg atop the white American cheese slice.
- Combine Sandwich: Add a pinch of salt and pepper to the egg, then bring the two slices of bread together, making sure not to press down to avoid breaking the yolk.
- Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Brush one side of the sandwich with melted butter and place it butter-side down in the skillet. Brush the top side with melted butter. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and cook until the bottom is golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until it is golden and the cheese has melted into a gooey consistency.
Notes
- Use medium-low heat to ensure the bread toasts evenly without burning and the egg yolk remains runny.
- Covering the sandwich with aluminum foil helps the cheese melt perfectly.
- Do not press down on the sandwich when assembling to keep the egg yolk intact.
- This recipe is easily adaptable – try swapping ham for bacon or turkey slices.
- For a healthier option, use whole grain bread and low-fat cheese.
