This easy Crab Salad Recipe is creamy, fresh, and versatile. It can be served with crackers, in lettuce cups, on sandwiches, or mixed with pasta for a quick crab pasta salad. The salad features tender crab meat combined with crisp celery and a tangy mayonnaise dressing, enhanced with fresh lemon juice and optional dill for brightness.
Ingredients
Crab Salad Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds crab meat, or imitation crab meat
- 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2/3 cup Best Foods mayonnaise, or Hellmann's
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- Fresh dill, optional, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Crab: Break the imitation crab meat into small pieces using your hands or coarsely chop it with a knife. Alternatively, pulse it briefly in a food processor for smaller pieces.
- Chop the Celery: Finely chop the celery stalks ensuring they are small enough to mix well and provide a fresh crunch.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, add the chopped crab, celery, salt, pepper, and optional dill. Stir to distribute the seasonings evenly.
- Add Dressing: Stir in the mayonnaise and fresh lemon juice until the crab mixture is evenly coated and creamy.
- Serve or Chill: Serve the crab salad immediately or cover and refrigerate. It can be enjoyed as is, stuffed into lettuce cups, layered in sandwiches, or served with crackers for dipping.
Notes
- Chill the crab salad for at least 30 minutes before serving for the best flavor.
- If the crab meat is wet, pat it dry to avoid a watery salad.
- For a dip, chop the crab more finely to make it easier to scoop.
- To make crab pasta salad, add cooked and cooled short pasta, and adjust mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, and pepper accordingly.
- For a Neptune crab salad variation, add hard boiled egg, peas, pickles, shredded carrot, onions, Old Bay seasoning, or paprika.
- Use real crab meat if preferred, but pick through it carefully to remove any shell pieces.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 2 to 3 days.
- Do not freeze crab salad because the mayonnaise-based dressing will separate.
