Description
This Creamy Chipotle Sauce is a versatile, smoky, and spicy condiment perfect for tacos, dips, sandwiches, and more. Made with chipotle peppers in adobo, sour cream, and a blend of seasonings, it offers a rich and flavorful addition to your favorite dishes with minimal prep time.
Ingredients
Chipotle Mixture
- 1 can Chipotles in adobo (7 oz can)
- ½ cup Sour cream (or Mexican crema)
- ¼ cup Mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp Fresh lime juice
- ½ tsp Ground cumin
- ½ tsp Mexican oregano (or regular dried oregano)
- Kosher salt and black pepper to taste
- White sugar (optional)
- Fresh cilantro (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the peppers: Using gloves, carefully remove the stems and seeds from the chipotle peppers. You will only need the flesh and adobo sauce for the sauce.
- Blend the ingredients: Place the prepared chipotle peppers in a blender or food processor. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, fresh lime juice, ground cumin, oregano, and a pinches of kosher salt and black pepper. Blend everything until you achieve a smooth and creamy sauce.
- Taste and adjust seasoning: Sample the sauce and adjust the seasoning as desired. The flavor should be smoky, salty, slightly sweet, and mildly spicy. Add white sugar if you prefer to balance the heat, though it is optional.
- Serve: Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh cilantro if desired. Alternatively, pour the sauce into a squeeze bottle for easy application on tacos or sandwiches.
Notes
- Use gloves when handling chipotle peppers to avoid irritation from the spicy oils.
- You can store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute sour cream and mayonnaise with vegan alternatives.
- Adjust the number of chipotle peppers according to your preferred spice level.
- This sauce pairs well with grilled meats, fish tacos, roasted vegetables, and as a dipping sauce for fries or chips.
