Description

This homemade Blueberry Frozen Yogurt is a refreshing and creamy treat made with fresh blueberries, sugar, and Greek yogurt. Slow simmering the blueberries enhances their natural sweetness, and blending with rich Greek yogurt creates a smooth, tart, and mildly sweet frozen dessert perfect for a healthy and delicious snack or dessert.

Ingredients

Frozen Yogurt Ingredients

  • 1 pint blueberries (~2 1/2 cups)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, add more as needed
  • 1 cup whole milk Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. Simmer Blueberries: Add the blueberries and sugar to a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, and cook for 10 minutes to soften the berries and release the juices.
  2. Strain or Puree Mixture: For a smooth texture, strain the blueberry mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Use the back of a large spoon to mash the blueberries and extract as much liquid as possible, discarding the solids. Alternatively, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture thoroughly for a smoother consistency.
  3. Chill the Blueberry Base: Refrigerate the blueberry mixture until completely chilled. To speed this process, place it in the freezer but monitor closely to prevent it from freezing solid. Stir occasionally to keep consistency even.
  4. Combine and Freeze: Mix the chilled blueberry mixture with the Greek yogurt until evenly combined. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
  5. Set for Serving: Serve immediately for a soft-serve-like texture or transfer the frozen yogurt to a freezer-safe container and freeze for several hours for a firmer, scoopable consistency.

Notes

  • Adjust sugar quantity according to the sweetness of your blueberries or personal preference.
  • For a smoother frozen yogurt, always strain or puree well to remove seeds and skins.
  • If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can freeze the mixture and stir every 30 minutes to break up ice crystals for a homemade version.
  • Use whole milk Greek yogurt for the best creaminess, but low-fat Greek yogurt can be used for a lighter option.
  • Store leftover frozen yogurt in an airtight container in the freezer to maintain freshness.
