Description

Crispy and flavorful Air Fryer Fried Pickles are a quick and easy Southern-inspired snack. Coated in a seasoned breadcrumb mixture and cooked to golden perfection in the air fryer, these pickles are delightfully crunchy on the outside while keeping a tangy, juicy center. Perfect as an appetizer or snack with your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Pickles

  • 1 1/2 cups dill pickle slices

Breading

  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs (with a small splash of water)
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

Finish

  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pickles: Lay out the pickle slices on a cutting board and pat dry on both sides to remove excess moisture, which helps the breading adhere better.
  2. Preheat Air Fryer and Prepare Equipment: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Set out a baking sheet or large plate to place the breaded pickles on before cooking and have a wire cooling rack ready to place the cooked pickles on after air frying.
  3. Set Up Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls side by side. In the first bowl, add the flour. In the second bowl, beat together the eggs and a splash of water until well combined. In the third bowl, mix together the panko breadcrumbs, plain breadcrumbs, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, black pepper, and kosher salt.
  4. Bread the Pickles: Take each pickle slice and dredge it in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat the pickle in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the crumbs stick well on both sides. Place the breaded pickle on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with all pickle slices.
  5. Air Fry the Pickles: Arrange the breaded pickles in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overlapping (cook in batches if needed). Lightly spray the pickles with cooking spray to enhance crispiness. Air fry for 5-8 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time, until golden and crispy.
  6. Cool and Serve: Transfer the cooked pickles to the wire cooling rack and let them cool for a few minutes. Serve warm or hot with your choice of dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Patting the pickles dry before breading is essential to ensure the coating sticks well.
  • Cooking in batches prevents overcrowding and ensures even crispiness.
  • A light spray of oil helps achieve golden brown and crispy texture in the air fryer.
  • For extra flavor, try serving with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or a tangy dipping sauce.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs if a gluten-free version is desired.
